Australia and England will lock horns in the second test match of the 2009 edition of the Ashes series on Thursday, when they meet at Lord's. And with the score-line reading 0-0 after the first test match at Cardiff was drawn, it will be interesting to see which team draws first blood in the game.

Australia had the better of most exchanges in the Cardiff encounter and yet, they were not able to close out the match as they would have expected. Going into the last day needing eight wickets, Australia had managed to bag three of them in the first session, but could garner only four more in the next two, to have only a draw to show for their effort.

However, what they will be cock-a-hoop with, would be the effort of the bowling side, especially the under-fire spinner, Nathan Hauritz. The off-spinner bowler captured six wickets in the game and out-bowled his English counterpart to almost bowl his side to the doorsteps of a win. He may not get enough spin from the Lord's pitch, but he is bound to retain his place.

Amongst the batsmen, there were four century scorers for Australia and that should augur well for them. With Marcus North and Brad Haddin slamming a century each at the number six and seven position, and Mitchell Johnson a decent bat at eight, it does look like their batting is something of a plus point.

England, on the other hand, would be ruing the wasted opportunity in the first innings, when ten of their batsmen got starts but not a single century was scored. The worst affected would be Kevin Pietersen who was put under a lot of pressure by the media and the opposition alike, both, on and off the field and seemed to have succumbed to it.

England is sure to drop one of the two spinners for this game, especially given Lord's record as a seamer-friendly track. Graeme Swann did not have a great game with the ball, but he did well enough with the willow in his hand to deserve the lone spinner's spot, which means that Monty Panesar who batted out more than ten overs, will get the boot.

Panesar's spot will be taken by Graham Onions, who had a five-wicket haul in his debut game against West Indies, and is also the back-up seam bowler in the squad. And if there enough cloud cover, he could prove to be quite a handful with the new ball in his hand.

Sri Lanka are undefeated in the series. Their batsmen are in top form. They have played beautifully in the series but I find fast bowling as their weakness. They must have some solid opening with the ball. Chamara Silva alone seems to be a player out of form.

Arthur’s opposite number, Pakistan’s Intikhab Alam, knows what to expect. “The history of South African cricket tells us that at the crunch time, when it really matters, they have choked,” said Intikhab. “I hope that they do that again. They are a very talented side but the pressure will be on them. They have come very, very close but they have never won.”

Pakistan have been the antithesis of South Africa in this tournament: occasionally inspired, often shambolic. Their outstanding fast bowler, Umar Gul, has been accused, with no hard evidence, of ball tampering for managing to reverse swing the ball within 20 overs. Their captain, Younus Khan, said after defeat against England that Twenty20 was just a bit of fun and has developed a maniacal laugh at media conferences to prove it.

All the SA batsmen right from the opening pair of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis followed by Herschelle Gibbs, AB de villiers, Albie morkel, JP Duminy and the reat seem to be in great touch. Although Kallis has been rested for the match against India, he is coming back in the Semi’s match and that’ll surely add to their strength. Their Bowling too looks to be in great shape with Wayme Parnel being a superb addition to their line up. He has bowled some scorching deliveries in this tournament. Vander merwe as always is a 100% effort man besides Dayle stayne who can bowl some real fast deliveries.

Pakistan on the other hand seems to found a really good opener in Shahzaib hasan who looks to take his risks early on and go for the big shots. Kamtan Akmal also got back into form after he won the man of the match in their last Super 8 match. Misbah ul Haq hasn’t really got a chance in this tournament till now but we know what he can do in pressure situations from the last T20 final. Umer Gul, with his huge deadly in-swingers is just brilliant. So it should be great match to watch all in all which will be aired on Star cricket at 10PM IST.

India are out of the T20 World Cup and only have a dead rubber against South Africa left to look forward to. Graeme Smith's side are generally ruthless in this sort of situation and this match should be no different, says Alan Dudman.

Team News:

India crashed out of the competition at the hands of England on Sunday, and could be feeling the effects of that crushing defeat. Morale may be a problem with both MS Dhoni and Harbhajan criticising the batsmen for blowing their hopes of retaining the 20/20
trophy.

The bizarre tinkering of the batting line-up against the hosts failed miserably, and I really
do not want to see Dhoni ever coming in at six - he is too good for that. Yusuf Pathan has also
been wasted at seven. RP Singh and Ravindra Jadeja were in for Ojha and Irfan Pathan
against England, and as well as Jadeja bowled, he cost them the chance of victory with
a painstaking 25. He could make way for Ojha.

South Africa are looking like a beautiful sleek eagle surrounded by plump lazy pigeons,
and have the best all-round team in the tournament. They bat, field, spin and bowl pace superbly, and have fielded the same eleven throughout.

Albie Morkel batted at five against the Windies with Duminy dropping to seven, which
gives them great flexibility.

Pitch Conditions:

South Africa have only played at Trent Bridge once in the tournament thus far, and comprehensively outplayed England with a superb display in the field.

It will be interesting to see if South Africa adopt the same pace approach as England
did against India, by bowling as many short balls as possible. Parnell and Steyn are quicker than anything England have, so this could be interesting.

Good teams generally get high scores here, with the forecast for a warm and clear
evening ahead.

Match Odds:

With the champions out of the tournament - India have been sliding since their demise and can be backed in the outright match market at 2.30. It's a great price for a side that was labelled one of the best only two weeks ago. However, they are out of the competition, and morale might not be as it should.

South Africa continue to bulldoze anyone in their way, and are a pretty decent price to back at 1.70 considering they are 2.64 to win the tournament outright. They have no obvious flaws and haven't been as big as that for a while.

Top Batsman:

All of South Africa's batsmen are getting runs apart from AB de Villiers, and considering I have sided with him twice so far, he has got to strike sooner or later on pitch which will be ideal for his backfoot game. Anything around 5.00 would be perfect.

Rohit Sharma was having a fine tournament until he failed against England. I expect MS Dhoni will have something to prove to the nation, having apologised for the team's exit. He should be seriously considered to end on a high note at around 5.10.

Two good sides and a decent pitch, with top batters make this a recipe for a fairly high scoring game. We have had two games at Trent Bridge with 190+ scores posted so far. The media was waiting for captain MS Dhoni to address them ahead of their opening match against Bangladesh here at Trent Bridge on Saturday. But what they got, after a 15-minute wait, was the entire Indian team, plus the 11-member support staff too.

Dhoni carried a hand-written statement for moral support. He took the centre chair, like always, while team manager V Chamundeshwarnath sat grimly to his left. The others stood behind them, smiled nervously and struck happy poses for the shutterbugs and TV cameras.

The entire purpose behind this drama was, of course, to signify team unity ahead of the Twenty20 World Cup. It became even more apparent when Dhoni read out the statement which sought to dismiss TOI’s Friday report of a possible rift between himself and Virender Sehwag.

It was almost similar to the scenes that were enacted ahead of India’s World Cup match against Zimbabwe in 2003.

Following the team’s humiliating defeat against Australia, fans in the country had gone on a rampage, even destroying players’ homes and property. Then, Sachin Tendulkar, a national hero, too read out a brief statement, urging the fans to calm down and have faith in the team.

That was a different context, of course. This time, even though there are rumours about differences between the captain and vice-captain, the situation hadn’t gone out of hand. Dhoni, however, probably understands the significance of such a fallout, especially if the team fails to defend the title.

The drama, however, wasn’t the only shock for the media. Dhoni led the entire team away as soon as the statement was read, without even bothering for the press conference. A few complained about the skipper’s disregard for ICC rules, which stipulate that the captain and coach (or any member of the team) must address the media before and after every game.

The ICC officials themselves were stumped by the team’s conduct and quietly faced the wrath of the angry press contingent. They said, "What can we do? We don’t control the Indian team." They soon got into damage control mode, though, and Gary Kirsten eventually appeared for the briefing.

Kirsten, a dour opening batsman in his heydays, got into an aggressive mode. "When we get accused of infighting it hurts us. That doesn’t happen in this team. Certainly in my time, it (infighting) has never happened. It just hurt a little bit. We wanted to send a message across to the Indian people that this team is really unified. We have been for a long time now," he said.

He even chose the occasion to preach the virtues and needs of responsible reporting. "The players understand that there is a place for the media. At the same time I think there is a responsibility on both sides. We play positive cricket and we try and win games. From the media’s side, it is important that they report responsibly," he said.

But why did the team come up with such a farcical response? "It was a collective decision to show the Indian fans that our players are united. It was a risk drawing attention to the issue in this way but it’s not going to affect us. What it’s done is motivated the players and made them more determined. It’s given us more direction in terms of what we want to achieve for the Indian people," was Kirsten’s explanation.

What he, of course, conveniently ignored was the fact that a member of the team management himself had leaked details about the ‘tiff’ between the captain and vice-captain to a section of the media. Sehwag’s injury and Dhoni’s curious comments on his availability after the warm-up game against Pakistan only added fuel to the controversy.

Kirsten’s comments on Sehwag’s availability, however, did not exactly douse the fire. "No one is certain of a place in the playing XI. Everyone knows that and they respect that. We run with what we think is the best option and what’s really nice about this team is that everyone backs everyone else in terms of the decision," Kirsten said.

And they want the media to believe that.

Let me talk about Australia some because they have played a match earlier today against West Indies. On paper, the kangaroos are much stronger than West Indies. In fact in T20 World cup 2007, West Indies could not go to the second round and that is why, this time they are with Australia and Sri Lanka in the same group. Even just a few days ago, West Indies suffered a very humiliating defeat in England against England and if that is why, very few people thought that they would be able to defeat Australia.

Australia play Sri Lanka on Monday at Trent Bridge needing victory to have any chance of going through to the Super 8 stage while West Indies play the Sri Lankans at the same venue on Wednesday.

Big-hitting David Warner rescued Australia after they lost Shane Watson and Ricky Ponting in consecutive balls of the first over to be 3-2.

He hit 63 off 53 deliveries, including six boundaries and a six while Michael and David Hussey combined for a stand of 30 in 14 balls to hoist the world's top rated Test team to a respectable score.

On the other hand, Australia played Pakistan a month ago and at that time they looked quite solid. So, the defeat of today was a big disappointment for the kangaroos. Well, in the practice match Australia convincingly defeated Bangladesh. Of course, Bangladesh and West Indies are two different teams. What they feel is that Australian batsman and bowlers both are studying at the moment. It should not happen because they regularly come and play in England and should not have problem with the English condition. Their fielding is not bad but I feel that the batsmen need to be more consistent. I also believe that the coach has a very important role to play and If needed they should get some kind of help from experts on psychology. After all, they’re the world champion of cricket but it seems to me that they are a bit too weak when it comes to the matter of t20 version of cricket.

SRI Lanka is always a dark horse in any cricketing event. They have some exceptional players and I really admire their batting lineup. Their fielding is also good and in the practice matches, SRI Lanka at first defeated Bangladesh but then lost to South Africa. Well, some of their players played in Indian premier league and that is why I think that some of them may be some tired. Tired or not, the players have to give their total commitment and effort if they want to defeat Australia. They have to remember that Australia is on the verge of elimination and that is why the Australian players will give their best just to stay alive in the tournament.

I am concerned about the batting line up of Sri Lanka. They performed badly against South Africa in a warm up match the other day.
